F1 23 game review!!! Is it worth your cash?
So F1 23 and today blog I am going to review F1 23 and give my honest opinion upon it and has it delivered? Now a few year ago for F1 2021 I did the exact same thing as I am going to do today. I will score the game upon each segment of the game with a score of 0 to 5 and then total them up which should give us a grade at the end. The grades are A - 25 to 20, B - 19 to 15, C - 14 to 10, D - 9 to 5 and E 4 to 0!
Also a few years ago I also predicted and want to the the downfall of the F1 game series. And in that I said “Now yes 2020 does have more reviews but if trends kept going the way they’re going well that could be below even 2.5 rating for codemasters! That would be significantly low!”
And F1 22 met my prediction with google reviews giving the game a mediocre 2.4!
So was I right? I don’t take pride in saying so however I did predict this and did say it at the time.
And that was back on F1 2021! Which on google reviews scored an 3.1. So ultimately I saw a trend with the games going downhill and for sure I was right that this trend would continue in F1 22 but has it improved since then and what do I think about F1 23. Well let’s start with our first category.
Braking Point Part Two.
Now last time out one of my major criticisms of braking point was Aiden Jackson actually, now whilst many people prefer him over Devon Butler but personally it’s not hard to hate upon a obnoxious or arrogant person where Aiden seemed maybe like the hero in this game but one thing about F1 is they are competitors on or off the track. Aiden behind the scenes became a push over in F1 21 but in F1 23 this seemingly has changed and of course I’m pleased but then when it comes to why Butler had to retire I feel the excuse is a bit cheesy and weak. I’m not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t done it yet but I do feel the could’ve been a better way of getting him out of F1! Maybe the team boss of Conner Sport should sacked him for disobeying team orders, I think that would’ve been a lot more dramatic and better then what we got.
The other downside to Braking Point it’s very easy to do and complete. The no real challenge and also none of it features any of the new tracks. And a final thing I’ll add is we as the player are always put outside the top 10 for no real apparent reason.
Overall like I said last time it’s a decent beginners guide for younger generation players of the game to experience. The story mode doesn’t get me hooked onto it, I mean I can go away multiple days and not give two peanuts about the story mode at all.
So for me this getting a 2 out of 5.
Online
Now online is still fundamentally the core feature and they’ve added to it once again with F1 World of which is a new online feature but to be honest I don’t understand it, I don’t get the objective and that’s where this begins to go wrong. Because when you play any game
It needs the basics and part of the basics is giving your players the control or an objective to work towards. For me F1 world is practically as good as the super car addition to the game. Personally I don’t like it, I don’t see myself spending a lot of time on it besides maybe the events which you can unlock certain features potentially which will be by looks of it added to the game for instance I think it’s cool that you can get the Triple Crown McLaren livery which has already been added and besides that I don’t see myself playing F1 world again.
It’s like the super cars which are still the game I don’t use them really so it’s a bit of flawed concept. What is tech level and what does it mean?
With also the online racing, well I have noticed a few screen freezes on number of occasions and also in a league I am part of have already announced they aren’t going to be doing cross play as it’s unplayable.
But then again F1 22 was just as bad if not worse.
It’s a difficult one this but I’m going to online the same score as I did a few years ago and it’s getting a 2 out of 5.
Handling Model/Physics
Now this game probably does in all fairness to it have the best handling model since F1 2018. I genuinely think you have to go that far back to find me a handling model that was better. But my problem with this handling model is maybe it’s got too much grip? Or the cars are over performed, the performance of the cars need dialing down a bit, and as a pad/controller player at first it’s really unusual with the precision drive feature in the game. I’ve gotten use to it but at first takes some real adapting to in order to become at one with the car. But besides that the tyre degradation is ridiculous on this game. I mean the softs won’t last two two seconds let alone two minutes and even the mediums and hards have a huge drop off in performance.
I like the handling for sure in addition to that the marbles added into the game is a very nice new addition but what I would say I can now understand why developers again haven’t added them into the game before now or any racing game because it’s a stupid idea. Let’s be Frank about it and honest here because at 200mph in real life I don’t know how they obviously see things but on a game at 200mph it’s impossible to spot these things because they’re so small it makes them invisible but you know they’re there and certainly know about it when you pick them which net result can hinder you unnecessarily.
In terms of the AI again the been some improvements and some less improvements but overall I like the AI a bit more as they seem to be a bit more forgiving. You can certainly dive them and they’ll jump out the way…
But as I said the handling is massive step forward and I’ll give it 3 out of 5. I want to wait a bit more and see how potential patches are going to either improve or affect the handling of the game.
Career mode/my team.
Let’s keep it short, simple and sweet, 0 out of 5.
Yep nothing! Look it’s been 4 consecutive games now where we’ve had the same back screens, same stuff in all the last number of games. Absolutely nothing. And if you not adding anything to it then you might as well forget.
Eventually you get bored of doing it.
Think of it this way, you can play 10 seasons in each career mode since F1 2016. For the last 40 of the 60 seasons of career mode which have been available to all players in the game, 40 season have been the exact same. No changes whatsoever!
Customisation
Again 0 out of 5! I mean It’s getting worse, worse and worse every game you buy.
Yeah or at least my opinion. Surely just on launch they can add more and make more helmets, suits and car livery’s available? I know you can buy some more through the pit coin or whatever but besides that it’s so basic to begin with. So basic and so poor and it not just the lack of but it’s the lack of creativity that the developers have put into the designs of the suits and helmets whatever. It’s very amateurish.
And finally Additional features
And this year saw the return of RedFlags and sure enough red flags are a red flag within itself because they don’t work! Surprising hey, I mean they do work but I will or it could mess up your game in the sense it’ll alter the result upon you and multiple people and YouTuber have experienced this big time.
The new track tho are brilliant, these are probably something which are going to salvage this section. Qatar is such a fast and flowing track and Las Vegas, well it’s Vegas! Need I say anymore?
So overall this gets an 2.5 out of 5. Decent tracks but big let down when it comes to red flags and also the marbles which totally feel unnecessary.
So overall this game them gets a 9.5 which therefore in my scoring system puts it just shy of a C rated game and I think that’s about based on launch a fair objective opinion.
The are good baseline features in it such as handling and new tracks but the also a few feature which to get into the C grade or even a B grade, it’ll need to have a few obvious patches. Like for instance had red flags worked and these marbles weren’t I’d probably given that a 4 or 4.5 potentially but I can’t give it more that section more then 2.5 because it doesn’t warrant it upon two new tracks alone which are going to be part of the 2023 annual calendar. Having all the official tracks in the game is literally an essential to the very essence of what the game is about.
Overall this gets a slightly worse rating then F1 2021 at launch but overall it’s only slight. Which I think actually which is decent improvement. The have been a few more segments to this review which may have bumped the score slightly but it’s only just shy of a C rated game which is basically in my opinion average. Is it worth your £60?
I would say if you got the money and want to treat yourself to a new F1 game then yes it is, but if you don’t want to spend all that money I’d recommend just wait a bit more longer until it drops in price to more reasonable of what your willing to pay out for such a game.
I will comeback to this review at a later date and update it upon any additional patches/updates as I did with F1 2021 which saw its score upgraded from a C to a B. So the are potential if the developers change things for it to be improved.
