Three things we learned from Azerbaijan π¦πΏ GrandPrix??? is it time for Sprint to jog on?
Well it wasn’t the most thrilling race weekends as races go and the IndyCar later on in the day was better race from a entertainment stand point but here’s what I took away from Azerbaijan.
Safety wasn’t top priority!
Firstly want to talk about what occurred at the end of the race because safety usually in F1 is considered priority number and what happened was shambolic and ultimately we are very fortunate not to have witnessed a crowd get run down and potentially hurt or worse killed, obviously I don’t have the ins and outs of what happened or how it occurred but what did occur was shocking and never seen anything like it within my time watching F1!
And I hope that I never see anything like it again because it was a shambles and I hope no one loses the job over this but I hope the FIA take note, the event organisers and hope F1 itself will make sure this doesn’t occur in the future and it’s not the first time that we’ve seen people allowed into the pit lane before the race ended because in Australia last year I think it was Alex Albon had a similar near scare, maybe not as dramatic but certainly shouldn’t be the norm, the only people who should be allowed in the pit lane are Camera crew when safe, FIA scrutinisers, Team personnel and that’s it!
Until the race ends no photographers or whoever should be let in like that.
New Sprint format I don’t like! And F1 might either have to abandon it or go back to what they had:
Now for me the whole point of a race weekend is that build up from Thursday driver press conference to Sundays GrandPrix. But with the structure it was it felt like Saturday was too much of anomaly for my liking and ultimately with the SQ sessions it was like wash, rinse and repeat and personally speaking I didn’t like it and the other thing that made it un-enjoyable was the fact we had two cars in the qualifying that was unable to set a further lap because the rules required for the qualifying that driver must use NEW set of tyres and ultimately that killed it in my opinion.
Because what we saw was two things, A) drivers either couldn’t even attempt a lap or B) those who could practically done it with 5 minutes remaining and the last attempt was pointless effort. Personally, I prefer the old format of the sprint because it had consequences if you got it wrong, if you got it wrong, it would affect where you begin your race on the Sunday. And for me this is what actually made sprint weekends worth their while and now as it’s just a standalone event just makes it whole thing pointless.
if they want to make, it may be a bit more exciting I would say they should do a group qualifying! And do it so it handicaps the top teams! Because this is what I thought the sprint was meant to do anyway? Wasn’t it supposed to handicap the bigger teams and give the smaller seems a bit of a hope and a bit of glimmer? And instead they are giving the bigger teams, more opportunity and more points! So they’ve achieved the exact opposite of what they aimed for!!! Thing is if F1 sticks with it I don’t see it working and I think it’s going to damage what F1’s about, so F1 have got three options. Option 1) Do another revision of the format, Option 2) go back to what they had in 2022 and 2021 or Option 3) like in the words of Max Verstappen “Scrap it”!
And those are the three options
Snooze fest and likely a snooze fest seasons ahead.
Look, I don’t want to admit it, but Red Bull are going to dominate. I know I said it last year about Ferrari when they had a brilliant start to the season and campaign, but the difference between RedBull’s and Ferrari of last year and this year our stark. Firstly, Red Bull have been dominant already in this era of car. Secondly, RedBull have two of the best drivers at the moment and be that in pure talent or form. Perez is on fire, Max is Max and that car is about 1 second a lap clear of everyone else. And what makes the season even worse it looks as if the regulations of potentially gone a step back to what they was before where a driver cannot follow.
if this is the case, the Racing in general, it’s just gonna be worse this year and so far you’d have to conclude it has been. What is such a shame is we in 2021 had two teams at least fighting and now after only a year or something we are back to those 2014 days of Mercedes where it’s a two horse race between just one team and the others are nowhere!
But yeah that’s why I took away from last weekends GrandPrix and let’s hope Miami could offer us something better.
