Three Major Takeaways from the Bahrain πŸ‡§πŸ‡ 2022 F1 GrandPrix.

Here are three takeaways from last weeks Bahrain πŸ‡§πŸ‡ GrandPrix.

  1. Ferrari are BACK: let’s start with the Scuderia and Ferrari’s win at Bahrain marks the end of their second longest win drought in F1. After Vettel’s last win in Singapore 2019 has seen the infamous brand of Ferrari go on a 46 race losing streak. 910 days later and Charles Leclerc ends that drought for Ferrari winning the first race of the new Era in some style having almost lead every single lap albeit for ONE. And it was no fluke! The performance has been witnessed in pre-season testing both at Barcelona and Bahrain and throughout the overall weekend was very strong showing for the Scuderia.
  2. Mercedes and Mercedes customers are in trouble?: Mercedes all weekend struggled not just with porpoising but also with sheer pace on the straights! 6 of the 8 Mercedes cars failed to even reach the top 10. This isn’t the norm of what’s gone on in the previous seasons of the hybrid era. And whilst Mercedes did make it into the top 10, they where significantly behind the rivals in Ferrari and RedBull when it came to the straight line pace. And in fact if we view the speed trap from Qualifying again 6 of the 8 Mercedes powered car where nowhere near the top half of the speeds. Even Mercedes where 15th and 17th? Does this indicate a horsepower deficit! Or has all the Mercedes teams got to much drag? Or are they effected this heavily by porpoising? Either way it’s not ideal for Mercedes and the customers such as Williams/McLaren and AstonMartin. Early indications indicate they could be in serious trouble unless it’s sorted quickly.
  3. The New Cars delivered. Something I think we can all agree upon is the first race of 2022 WASN’T boring. It delivered and the racing was close and exciting. The was battles throughout and even if some teams did show deficits, these where not as big as they where in the past. It took Leclerc 32/33 laps even before he started lapping back markers. However in previous years including last the field spread has been a lot more significant. Even in qualifying I feel it wasn’t too bad and I do think that it’ll be so much more track dependent that whilst I think yes Mercedes powered cars struggled here I don’t think this will always be the case elsewhere. And I reckon we could see a lot of variation track to track with car performances. But overall I think the first race of this new era of car delivered on most of its expectations.

So they’re my three major takeaways from this weeks GrandPrix and I cannot wait until Saudi Arabia in few days time from now.
