Should F1 change it’s RedFlag rules??
So question I want to look at today is should F1 change the RedFlag rules??? Now within the last 12 months the been 6 RedFlags! Now that is abnormally high considering how many red flags where thrown between 2015 to end of 2019 which was only 5!
So within the last 12 months we’ve seen as many RedFlags as we’ve seen across years of 5 seasons! So is it time for a change? Under the current rules it allows teams to change tyres, to change wings and damaged body parts like for like. It also under the current rules in enables drivers who are a lap down during races to come back onto the leaders lap. Now personally I think this is a rather unfair situation. Because ultimately put it this way your not allowed to leave the track and gain a advantage yet your allowed to repair a damage car or gain back significant time under one of these safety cars!
Also if you repaired a car during parc ferme you’d have to start your race from the pit lane. In my opinion the current set of rules are not fair to competitors up and down the grid irrespective of drivers.
What should be changed?
So what personally I think should be changed is A) the should be no repairs allowed and if the is need to carry out said repairs then like parc ferme rules then those driver in need of repair should either be forced/dropped down to the back of the grid or forced to start from the pit lane.
Also B) I think should a driver be a lap down they shouldn’t gain back the lap they’ve lost as this is in my view another unfair advantage on those ahead. As I say if you cut corners this is deemed wrong so why is handing someone who’s a lap down and giving them back their lap deemed acceptable???
Now I’m not saying anyone has acted illegally or anything cause obviously that’s not true but what I am saying is it time F1 rethinks it’s RedFlags rules to make it more fairer?
Like if your car is damaged that’s the drivers fault who’s driving it. Why should you gain a free repair and effectively have zero consequences for the damage you’ve inflicted upon yourself? And let’s not forget when you change stuff after parc ferme you’d inherit a pit lane start for doing so. And it’s not just me who starting to believe the rules need changing. A site called “Racefans.” Share a similar opinion to mine. For whoever wants to read this article can do so through following this link here. (https://www.racefans.net/2021/07/20/as-red-flags-become-more-common-f1-should-ban-repairs-during-suspensions/)
And it’s not just media who think this. Recently Toto Wolff is record stating "I didn't know that that was the rule in the US but I think it's an intelligent rule.” Referring to Indycars RedFlag rule where if a driver causes a crash in qualifying they lose the best lap time! This was said after Leclerc crashed his Ferrari into barriers at Monaco!
Now okay you can argue why change the rules now? “Your salty cause it’s benefiting Lewis.” Or whatever but no. Reason I think rules should be changed is purely out of fairness. Because ultimately truth is current rules are somewhat unfair. It’s just my opinion but I think 🤔 we do need to see some sort of change when it comes to process under the RedFlags.
