Has F1 new qualifying format worked?

So this weekend at the British GrandPrix F1 is trialing a new format structure. It’s aim is to produce better entertainment for fans not just at home but at trackside. But the question is has it worked? Well after today’s event I’m not tempted to say yes but I am certainly convinced the is something to work with here. Do I think it needs another opportunity? Well yes it does I wouldn’t mind seeing this format again because so far in my opinion it’s kinda worked. Now it hasn’t delivered anything a normal qualifying couldn’t deliver and we’re not going to get really a super mixed up grid because realistically other than Sainz who starts 11th and Perez who’ll start either 20th and last or from the pit lane ideally the grid is pretty much more or less the same as if we had a normal qualifying session of Q1, Q2 and Q3!

However and here’s the big but it was somewhat entertaining and for fans trackside to see a race on Saturday must of been fantastic, to see Qualifying on Friday again fantastic and I suspect most of fans especially trackside right now will feel very spoiled with the amount of track action and quality of the action. So for a trackside fan I’m sure it’s delivered however what about the average joe back at home?? Well I enjoyed the sprint, my fears of it came true in the fact what was delivered in qualifying on Friday just spilt into Saturday and we saw the RedBull of Verstappen and two Mercedes run away with it. Also we didn’t really see much of battle post lap 1 between the lead cars so ultimately those who started at top 3 well it was I guess a waste of time! But looking down the grid it was good for other such as Leclerc, Alonso, Vettel, Raikkonen and those who started particularly on the softs. Also the other thing I haven’t liked in the changing of timings. Not sure if this has effected anyone at the circuit but back at home I have found it somewhat of a confusing schedule! Like Qualifying 6pm! Then today the sprint race 4.30 and tomorrow the actual race 3pm! So the changing time of qualifying, sprint race and then final main event the “Race” doesn’t appeal to me in particular. It just feel every two minutes I’m having double check what time is the session gonna begin at. But on plus side again if your in attendance to that not only are you enjoying other series during the course of the day but you also getting a more packed day and will want to stay longer at the track.

Ultimately I think If I had to rate it so far I’d give it a 5/10! I like it, it was different, things probably for it to be real hit amongst general fans need to be tweaked but I think it has potential. It has something there and if gotten correct I believe this could be the future of racing in F1 but I don’t think it was perfect. I don’t think it 100% truly hit the sweet spot and whilst I enjoyed the first sprint race I didn’t feel personally overwhelmed like “hell yeah let’s do that again.” Instead I felt pleased but not excited.
